Artificial Intelligence in the Fight Against Colon Cancer

How can artificial intelligence improve the treatment of colon cancer? Find out how our gastroenterology team is committed to innovation and personalized care.

Through this innovative project, the team led by Dr. Sofie De Meulder (AZ Delta, Roeselare) and Prof. Dr. Jeroen Dekervel (UZ Leuven) aims to offer personalized, tailored treatment to patients with colon cancer in the future. Leveraging the enormous potential of artificial intelligence, the researchers will attempt to predict which cancers will behave aggressively and therefore require more intensive treatment to increase the chances of a cure. At the same time, the model will allow us to limit treatment for patients with less aggressive disease to what is necessary, thereby avoiding unnecessary side effects. A large database containing both digitized tissue samples and scans will be compiled. In this way, the researchers aim to improve and refine future treatments for colorectal cancer patients.

This research project is supported by Kom Op Tegen Kanker.
