Artificial intelligence in the fight against colon cancer
With this innovative project, the team of Dr. Sofie De Meulder (AZ Delta, Roeselare) and Prof. Dr. Jeroen Dekervel (UZ Leuven) wants to offer personalized treatment to patients with colon cancer in the future. With the enormous potential of artificial intelligence the researchers will try to predict which cancers will behave aggressively and therefore need a more intense treatment to increase the chances of healing. At the same time, the model will allow us to limit treatment to what is necessary for patients with less persistent illness and thus avoid unnecessary side effects. A large database containing both digitized tissue pieces and scans will be collected. For example, the researchers are trying to improve and refine future treatment for colon cancer patients.
This research project is supported by Kom Op Tegen Kanker.
