Artificial intelligence in the fight against colon cancer

20/6/2025

Within our Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases (MDL) service in AZ Delta, together with Prof. Dr. Jeroen Dekervel from UZ Leuven, we are taking an important step forward in the fight against colon cancer. With the help of artificial intelligence, we want to treat our patients even more specifically and personally.

By building a large-scale database with digitized tissue samples and imaging, we aim to predict which cancers behave more aggressively. This allows us to intensify treatments for these patients in a timely manner and thus increase their chances of healing. At the same time, we can limit the treatment for less aggressive tumors to what is strictly necessary, with fewer side effects as a result.

This project is a great example of how we, as an MDL team, focus on innovation and collaboration, with one goal in mind: to continuously improve the care for our patients.
